Accountability Coaching

For writers who have a project they want to finish within a specific time frame. An accountability coach can help you stay on track with your project and receive helpful suggestions along the way.

Writing is a solitary and isolated pursuit. Without the fellowship of other writers, we can become lonely and disillusioned (“I can’t nail the structure of my book, so I might as well ditch it.” Sound familiar?). Accountability coaching will help with this. Together, you and Emily will determine how to finish your project—from an essay to a book—while staying sane.

In the first 90-minute session, you will outline your project, create a time line in which to finish it, and establish weekly and monthly check points (for example, you might Skype monthly and exchange emails weekly). She will act as a “project manager” of sorts: to monitor progress, to enforce the deadlines, and to make out-of-the-box suggestions for overcoming blocks when (not if!) they arise. As with any of her roles, Emily will be an enthusiastic supporter through the ups and downs of the process. This service keeps you on-track and accountable to your project. It does not include reading pages.

Without Emily, my novel would be on the side of the road with tires spinning. She understood what I needed to find my way forward and guided me through the entire journey with brilliance.
— Chip Bristol, Greensboro, NC

Mentoring

For writers who have goals and projects in mind, but feel overwhelmed at the prospect of starting, start and then get discouraged and stop, or just need a “guide” through the process. I can be a guide through the writing process, from pre-writing to publishing.

Not sure what you need or how to get there? As a mentor, Emily will help you through every stage of the writing process: from idea generation, to writing tips, to deadline setting, to editing, to securing a readership platform and/or publishing. She will make suggestions about how to start writing, how to stay started (the difficult part!), and when to revise. She will suggest craft articles/books to help you with a specific page-level issues such as dialogue tags, point of view, or Hayakawa’s ladder of abstraction (don’t know what it is? Google it! Every writer can benefit from understanding this).

This inclusive service includes an initial 90-minute conversation, monthly Skype calls, and weekly page submissions. Because needs change depending on what part of the writing process you’re in, mentoring is highly customized. You can think of a mentor as a writing guide. This service combines teaching, accountability coaching, readership and publishing support.

Emily boosted my confidence toward my writing and showed me how to adapt elements of crafts where needed. Emily provided constructed feedback that always encouraged me to keep writing.

Content & Line Editing

For writers who want detailed feedback on pages. I can provide close, line-level manuscript feedback.

Content editing: a whole manuscript read with all-inclusive feedback—from content, to structure, to phrasing/line editing.

Line editing: a whole manuscript read focusing on copy edits—from typos to grammar to consistent formatting. Akin to copy editing.

I will never forget the completion of each segment and thinking, “That’s exactly what I’m trying to say!” .. Emily’s time, talent and level of professionalism was of unprecedented value!”
— Kristyn Levy, Salem, NH

Emily approached our relationship with the professionalism, empathy, and honesty that showed she understood how important my work is to me.

Publishing Guidance

For writers who have a finished project they are looking to publish. Receive help navigating the publishing process—from query to print.

Emily will guide you through the process of writing a pitch, synopsis, query letter and/or proposal; submitting to agents, editors or publishers; and following up.

While Emily’s to-date publications appear in magazines, journals and anthologies, she has experience with the process of book publishing, also.
